RADIOLOGY TRAINING IN THE ERA OF AI: LET’S EMBRACE THE FUTURE WITH CAUTION AND VISION

Abstract

The word “artificial intelligence (AI)” was coined more than 60 years ago. AI can be simply defined as “intelligence achieved by machines” and is a branch of computer science. [1] In the past few years, AI has generated great expectations in medicine, especially radiology.[2] The assimilation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into radiology is revolutionizing the approach medical imaging is performed, interpreted, and utilized. From deep learning algorithms which is capable of detecting subtle anomalies to automated systems streamlining workflow, AI’s has an undeniable role in transforming radiology. But as we stand at the verge of this technological revolution, one question looms large: How do we change radiology training in this AI-saturated environment? Logically the response should not merely accept AI as an instrument, but volte-face how we train the next generation of radiologists to work in reporting arenas where AI will be a part of the clinical process.
